Sound and Vision

The 4th annual Community Archives conference will be held at UCL on June 16th. Hosted by the Community Archives and Heritage Group and UCL Department of Information Studies, the theme of this year's conference is ‘Sound and Vision: our audio-visual community heritage’. The keynote address will be given by Carole Souter, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund. There will be presentations on the use of film, photographs and oral history in community history and heritage projects and the challenges of digital sustainability for small and independent archives.

Teaching Fellow

The Department of Information Studies is seeking a Teaching Fellow in Archives and Records Management for one year Sept 2010–August 2011. The post holder will teach courses on the Archives and Records Management and the Records and Archives Management (International) MAs.

Martin Neild

Martin Neild is to join the UCL Centre for Publishing as a Visting Fellow. He has regularly given lectures to UCL MA Publishing students and this role will be enhanced in future. He will also be joining a major research project with the Centre's partner the University of Paris to compare the publishing of first -time novelists in Britain, France and Canada. A former Chief Executive with major publishers Hodder and Stoughton, Headline and John Murray, and consultant to Hachette Group, he brings to the Centre experience from the cutting edge of trade publishing.

Sara Wingate Grey has been awarded a $7,500 travelling fellowship by IREX It will fund a research trip to Romania, presenting her work in Washington at the ALA conference, and at IFLA.

This month's edition of CILIP's Library & Information Update has articles by former MA LIS students: Chris Cooper, who won the BIALL dissertation prize, and Ann Coles

Jennie Courage (MA Publishing 2009), now working at OUP, has won a nationwide prize for her postgraduate dissertation. Working with the RNIB it is a study of the role ebooks can play in improving reading experiences for visually-impaired people.

Researchers

Demonstrating library value and impact. A study for Research Libraries UK that will develop evidence-based advocacy materials for library policy makers in higher education showing the contribution that libraries make to student satisfaction.

The evolving Generation Y Workforce. Working with UCL's Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management and Fujitsu, a leading provider of IT systems, services and products, to examine the potential implications of a new generation in the workforce: those who have always known information technology and expect it in every aspect of their lives.

Digital Research Exhibition

The British Library is holding a Digital Research Exhibition from September 2010 to May 2011 and CIBER has won the contact to evaluate its audience impact. The aims are to assess, over the course of the exhibition, the degree to which the digital research settings and capabilities exhibited are useful for particular audience segments; to identify features that render these settings and capabilities most useful, and scenarios in which they could enhance researchers' current experiences; to identify gaps in the exhibition; to engage the audience in the debate on the role of libraries, and the British Library in particular, in supporting digital research; to engage the audience in the development of new service propositions; and to contribute to knowledge and understanding amongst research libraries, specifically, and research-centric institutions more broadly of the capabilities of digitally-enhanced scholarship.

Online Piracy

Digital Publishing Forum 5 May 2010 16:00–18:00

This forum on online piracy examines current issues of strategic importance to academic, educational, trade and other digital publishers through a mix of presentations and discussion sessions. It will be chaired by Alicia Wise, Head of Digital Publishing, The Publishers Association, and Chief Executive, PLS. Speakers are Ronald Schild, CEO of MVB GmbH and libreka!, the official German ebook platform, and Mark Taylor, Anti-Piracy Officer, Macmillan Publishers.
